Compton, Los Angeles County
Compton is one of the oldest cities in Los Angeles County, incorporated in 1888 and named for Griffith D. Compton, who led a party of settlers here in 1867. It is nicknamed the Hub City for its position midway between downtown Los Angeles and the harbor. A white monument to Martin Luther King Jr. stands at the center of the civic plaza.
